ANACORTES, WA --- Puget Sound Refinery turned out in full force to celebrate Independence Day in Anacortes, WA.
On July 4, over 50 employees, emergency response team members, and friends and family gathered at the PSR Firehall. We loaded up the emergency response vehicles with giveaways for the crowd, and headed to the north end of Commercial Avenue in downtown Anacortes.
While we were lined up waiting for the parade to begin, everyone pitched in to decorate the trucks with flags and beads. We also rigged the fall protection systems needed to protect those riding on the trucks. Just over 17,000 bead necklaces and cases full of rubber duckies were made ready to hand out to the crowd.
The weather looked threatening, but it managed to cooperate. The crowd was awesome! Cheering and waving was almost overwhelming at times. Drivers moved the equipment slowly thru the parade in order to keep the beads and rubber duckies flowing to the anxious crowd.
“This is something that we do each year”, said Jody Barnett, External Affairs Coordinator. “It is a huge event in our little town, and it’s a lot of fun, because the whole family can participate."
