Environmental Record at Shell PSR
We take environmental stewardship very seriously. Here are just a few examples.
Reducing Local Smog
In 2000 and 2001 the refinery was awarded a special Clean Air Partner Award by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency for fighting summer smog. (We volunteered to refine and market lower vapor pressure gasoline.)We were also nominated for a Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention.
In 2005, Shell Puget Sound Refinery received ISO 14001 environmental management standard certification. This international standard certicication places the refinery in the top tier for environmental management practices of industrial facilities around the world. And we're committed to further upgrades and improvements. After all, we live here too!
Reducing Plant Emissions
We recently boosted our sulfur recovery capacity by 75 percent, at a cost of nearly $75 million. We are also installing new burners in our heaters to reduce emissions from our combustion equipment. These upgrades have drastically reduced emissions of both sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
Keeping Local Waters Sparkling Clean
The refinery received the Association of Washington Business Environmental Excellence Award for water quality after completing an $11 million upgrade to our wastewater treatment system. We’re committed to pursuing further upgrades. Current conditions are already good and we want to continue to improve. See the results of recent tests in the area.
We have a history of working to insure that we preserve the area where we work and live. Click on this link to see more of our history of recognition in this area. In addition, we have recently been recognized within the Shell Oil Products US organization as the refinery with the best environmental performance during the last year.
